Virginia's "Best Wedding Album"

Just back from Virginia's VPPA annual print judging. In addition to scoring five blue ribbons for our prints, our wedding album was judged "Best Wedding Album 2009" in judging spanning two full days with over 500 entries. Thank you to all of our clients who entrust us with their most cherished memories. We appreciate the ribbons and plaques, but really enjoy the reward of working with our clients the most.

Fiancee and Firefighter

In small towns and rural communities, volunteer firefighters and EMT's fill an enormous roll in providing emergency services to their fellow neighbors. Stephen is one of those volunteers who has found another love as well; Lauren.
At Lauren's request, a firetruck was pulled out of its bay for a special assignment. This huge prop made these images special for Stephen and Lauren and speak to the bond the new couple has for their community and each other. Stephen just won't be fighting fires on his Wedding Day!

Equestrian Family

Few things speak to the uniqueness of a family than a portrait created in a setting that is personal to the subjects. In this case, Mom and her two daughters share a love for horses, thus their portrait was created on a beautiful fall afternoon on the family's property. Mom's beautiful horse brought together their common bond and love for riding while late afternoon sunlight sculpted this portrait. This image was created with nothing but natural light (no reflectors, no flash) as horses are easily spooked by their use. The completed portrait served as a special gift for Dad on Christmas Day.

Memory restored

Few things become more precious than photographs of loved ones that are no longer with us. As a cherished photograph fades, it seems the memory fades as well. This image is a great example of what is possible in the restoration of a cherished photograph. The end result in this case is the combination of modern technology and timeless oil. The restored image brought tears to the owner's eyes as she viewed the portrait of her husband in breathtaking quality. This was a true Valentine's gift to herself and to her family. Our Dog turns Ten

Ten years ago, our daughter Ashley kept bugging us to get a dog. She had done her research and decided she wanted a Westie. We traveled to Maryland on a side trip to bring the dog home, however, Ashley's research didn't indicate that a Westie is a wiry little dog that resembles a goat when it's young. She was quite surprised and expected the cute dog with the smooth white long hair of a more mature dog. Ashley was in tears, and we asked her not to judge her dog by its looks (she was eyeing a little fluffy lapdog because he was soft and cute) Long story short, we brought our little (goat)... I mean dog home and "Gabby" has been a true part of our family now for ten years. Ashley has thanked us many times on the lesson she learned that day, not to judge a dog...(someone) by looks alone, but what is inside. Gabby has since grown into the cute dog Ashley wanted, and much more. It's amazing what we learn from our pets. Happy birthday "Gabby"

Kit Wilkinson

I've mentioned writer, Kit Wilkinson before, but she's creating quite a buzz with the publication of her new book, "Protector's Honor." She is featured on the front page of the Chesterfield Observer. Due to be released in September, Kit's debut novel is being published by Steeple Hill. I guess I should read the book; I just realized Valentine's Day is Saturday!! You can visit Kit's website @ www.kitwilkinson.com

Here are a few more images from the photography session we completed a few weeks ago.

South Carolina

Just back from South Carolina. I had the pleasure of being one of seven judges in South Carolina's Professional Photographers annual Print Competition in Myrtle Beach this past weekend. I did take a moment to capture a few images for myself with the Canon G10 (point/shoot camera). The view from my room at sunrise was a great way to begin the day and the weather was incredible for mid-February. I'd like to thank all of our hosts from South Carolina. It was refreshing to see so many wonderful images submitted for judging. Congratulations to all who entered as well as all who won awards!

Oil Portrait

One of our favorite subjects to photograph is a child. Their honesty and genuine curiosity is at its peak. The success of the portrait comes from engaging the mind of the child and bringing out their growing personality. Spending time with a child allows us to bring out this inner spark. Our ultimate way to finish the portrait is in fine oils and a handcrafted frame. This combination provides a way for us as parents to hold on to this precious memory even as the child grows up and eventually goes off to collage.... I find it important whether photographing in the studio or on location to produce a portrait that will stand the test of time. The simple beauty of this "formal portrait" with oils will be even more enjoyable in 25-50 years as the day it was created.

February Snow

An overnight dusting of snow made for a convenient photograph at our backdoor. Yes, I admit the image was made while in my slippers. My daughter Katie was a little bummed out as there was no school delay despite the beautiful scenery.
