A Warm Smile for a Chilly Day

Cameron was so excited to have his portrait made, he didn't even mind that the weather was chilly the day we created his portrait. Even a few drizzles of rain couldn't dampen his spirit! We used several scrims and reflectors to shape the light around him and to keep him dry as the portraits were made. We even had time to make a few images of Cameron hugging his mother toward the end of the session. My favorite memory of this six year old, is how well mannered he is. On his way out, Cameron left us with hugs and thanked us for "taking his picture."

Thank you, Cameron. I know your Mom and Dad are very proud of you.

Farmer's Market at Sunset

When I was a child growing up in South Hill, VA., I remember a farmer who would bring fresh vegetables from his garden into town to sell to local residents. We called him "Butterbean" Jones. It was a good name, because I can remember it after all these years. Some 40ish years later, the town now has a new pavilion for farmers to sell their produce.

I was reminded of this story as the sun settled over the new Farmer's Market pavilion while making photographs of the new structure, nestled in the center of this vibrant town in Southside Virginia.

As nice as the structure is, it was a challenge to photograph. A combination of five exposures were captured as the sun set in the western sky to achieve the desired results. Passing clouds overhead produced a nice contrast to complete the composition. Now all we need is fresh vegetables this summer; Mr. Jones would have been proud.

I have found through the years that to maintain a "creative spirit", an artist must "replenish the well". Those who create know the challenge of maintaining a fresh approach to their work and remaining enthusiastic for each project. If we spend all of our time creating, we can become artistically exhausted.

Several years ago, I was encouraged to read "The Artist's Way". One of the main goals of the study was to take the time as an artist to replenish our creativity. Many times, I will take a walk with a camera to "see"; not for a client but for myself. Some of my favorite photographs have come during these times of "just for fun" and enjoying the beauty of creation and the handywork of our Creator.

I also take the time to appreciate work by other photographers, painters, the visual arts and music. One of our favorite Sunday afternoon diversions is the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts: VMFA. What a wonderful resource for the arts. We will grab lunch in the cafe within the museum and then visit an exhibit on a regular basis. We have recently taken in works by Picasso, Tiffany's, and most recently a wonderful exhibit of photography by Alfred Wertheimer, featuring beautiful black/white photographs of Elvis before he was a household name. Wertheimer's eye and technical ability are evident in the many photographs taken over a very brief period of time leading up to Elvis's growing fame.

We were first introduce to the museum when we were children by my Great Aunt Frances Harris. I remember my sisters and I spending the week with her in the summer. During our visit, our first stop was the library to pick up a couple of books to read. We then spent the rest of our time seeing the many sites around Richmond, including the capital and the museum and of course the Fire Museum on Churchill (I'm sure that was for my benefit and not my sisters)

Frances would be proud to know we are now members of the museum she first introduced us to when we were children and the roll it plays in helping to maintain our creative energy.

Noah at Five

December is the month Noah turned 5 years old. It is also the time we made this lasting portrait of Noah for his parent's home. The morning of the camera study was unusually warm for this time of year and the sun's rays brightened our spirits as we created a composition around the lake on the family farm. The sun also created a few lighting challenges we overcame with scrims to shape the light as well as strobes to create the pleasing light Noah's face. The 24x30 canvas will now hang near his sister's portrait we created almost two years ago when she was five.
Great memories, and more to come.

Mom and Dad's Favorite Work of Art

What a delight to spend the morning creating portraits of these two siblings and their parents. Wanting to bring out the distinctive art in the home, we created a composition that would marry Mom and Dad's personal taste in art with their most prized personal art: their children. The colors within the portrait work in harmony but don't distract from the beautiful expressions of brother and sister. The detail of the art behind the children replicate the wonderful golden locks surrounding that priceless expression.

A New Beginning

In a previous post, we featured this beautiful image created in Grandfather's memorial garden just outside the window. It has now been beautifully framed and placed in a featured area of the home. Now, redecorating of the room will begin and designed around the framed painting. Hues of color from the portrait will be used to marry the room to the painting and existing art will be reframed to bring the entire room together once new window treatments, etc. are completed.

The pictures you took of our family in our garden bring such loving memories to mind. Raymond truly knew how much these pictures would mean to us after he was gone.
I have had the one of Raymond with Katie and Jane on a "Remembrance Table" at St. Bridget Church during the month of November. Matthew, Thomas, and I thought that was the perfect picture to display since the true reason for the photos was for Katie and Jane to "remember Gray."

Thank you so much for the beautiful pictures. Our home is filled with ones we ordered last year and I smile lovingly every time I pass one.

Sketchpad of a Relationship

Often, when working with couples, the lens of a camera becomes a sketchpad of the subjects portrayed in the image. Just as an artist composes an image on a blank sketchpad, so too does the photographer compose an image to "sketch" the resulting frame. When the elements of light, composition and emotion merge, the sketch appears and is ready to be captured. The environment and light enhance the emotional value of the image for a moment that will be valued by the couple for the rest of their lives. When viewing the images in years to come, they will feel the cool breeze blowing through the frame. They will also remember the warmth of their embrace shared in a field ablaze with the colors of Autumn's glory.

A Story full of Meaning

Just a few decades ago, a family household would consist of three generations. Grandparents, parents, and children would all share their lives together living under one roof. (Remember "The Waltons" tv show?)

Today's generation is far different in most cases. Grandparents and grandchildren may be separated by many miles, and in some cases across the seas. Family gatherings may only be possible during special occasions.

To bridge the gap of time together, many grandparents commission us to create a portrait of their grandchildren to enjoy while their little loved ones are away.
Creating a portrait that speaks to the individual family adds layers to the portrait with meaning.

The camera study above is an example of the grandchildren sharing a story together within a garden made for the expressed memory of their late grandfather. Their story is repeated by the sculpture just behind them with walking stones gracefully leading the viewer through the visual story. This meaningful moment is captured especially for grandmother. A gift of art of her family that carries a lifetime of meaning.

The Callahan Family

Through the years, we have had the privilege of photographing families and individuals from all walks of life. Some live in foreign countries, others live right next door. In the process of creating a portrait, we find it important to know a little about their lives, what their interests are and the life they share together.

As we created this portrait of the Callahan family, we came to realize that it was not only a beautiful area of their farm, it was also the area that mom would watch from afar as her kids walked to the school bus. Now the children are adults and in college or holding careers of their own and Mom and Dad enjoy the pleasures their first grandchild. Even so, the family is surrounded by an environment that helped shape their lives and holds meaning to them all.

Fall colors are beginning to "paint" the landscape with beautiful golden hues all around us. The best part is that the most beautiful tree is often in your own yard. Grab your camera and explore the visual display in front you. Be sure to move in close for a few photographs to isolate just a few leaves that catch your eye. A macro lens works best for fine detail, however most point and shoot cameras will have a close up setting (flower symbol) that will allow your camera to be within inches of your subject. The display of colors should be spectacular this year. Enjoy the show!

We have had the pleasure of photographing Taylor and his family for several years now. We first met him when his sister was a rising Senior in high school. Since then we have created several portraits for their home to establish a memory for the family (especially Mom and Dad) as their children grow into adults and move away to college.

This portrait compliments Taylor's personality and style which will reflect an accurate portrayal of this young man for his family for generations to come.

A Richmond Wedding to Remember

Beautiful autumn skies presided over Keely and Adrian's wedding, both during their ceremony and throughout the evening. Guests sipped hot cider upon arriving at Keely's family home, the site of her afternoon wedding to Adrian. Family and friends from The Netherlands, London, China, and across the United States assembled to witness an exquisite wedding and reception.

Later in the evening, illuminated trees above transparent tents enveloped the surroundings and provided both a beautiful vista expanding to the evening skies as guests celebrated during a festive candlelight dinner and dancing.

A Family Portrait

A Family Portrait is a wonderful way to keep everyone close to you. This beautiful camera study of the J family was created at the family lake home over the July 4th holiday weekend. Even the family pet created a lively dimension to the composition.

We chose to create the portrait in the late afternoon to take advantage of the suitable light that sculpted the landscaping in the background, but provided indirect sunlight on the family. (An hour earlier, the deck was in full sunlight) We took the time to add additional light with a 1600 ws strobe to add dimension to the beautiful, but somewhat flat light on the subjects. This strobe provided the right amount of "seasoning" of light to bring dimension and depth to the group to match the eye pleasing landscape and home in the distance.

Finally, the 32"x50" framed portrait was painted to enhance overall presentation over the stone fireplace mantle. Now, regardless of where the family roams, they will always be together.

Capturing Emotion

The foundation of photography is not about equipment or the latest software to enhance your pictures. Rather, the foundation of the art of photography is layered with light and emotion and the ability of the photographer to freeze a fluid moment into a valuable memory. Almost any camera will do; even cell phones capture truly memorable images when these elements merge.

In this emotionally filled slice of life, the bride's grandmother is spontaneously overcome with tears of joy as she sees her granddaughter in her wedding gown for the first time. The resulting spontaneous embrace is the culmination of a lifelong bond between grandmother and grandchild. With the elements of light and emotion in full measure, we are able to witness a beautiful moment, however the real beauty is the ability of this photograph to transport these two individuals to this very moment in time (emotions and all) each time they see this image.
Viewing the moment in black and white strips away the distractions of color and helps to enhance the emotional feel of the photograph.

Last but not least, to truly capture emotion in a picture, the photographer must allow themselves to feel the emotion as well while composing the image. The emotion can be laughter, sorrow,etc. or in this case, a heartwarming embrace.

Reminder of a Good Friend

Wanda and I took a break this week to see the movie, "The Help." As I watched the story unfold on the "big screen", I was vividly reminded of my friend, Don Rutledge, who's life has mirrored that of the main character in the movie; Skeeter. Where Skeeter used a pen to create her work, Don used a camera.

Early in his career, Don took on a self assignment to photograph a white writer (John Howard Griffin) who had found a way to make his skin dark to disguise his true race. Don photographed this man as he experienced the life of a black man in New Orleans and deep south in the early sixties. The book, "Black Like Me," accompanied with Don's photographs became a national "best seller." www.stanleyleary.com/Don.htm

I first met Don while I was in the midst of a career change to pursue photography and working at Old Dominion Camera in Richmond. I finalized his purchase of a "brick" of 35mm slide film he would be using for a story for Black Star Photo Agency in New York. Shortly after his purchase, I walked into a restaurant a few doors down and passed Don already having lunch. He asked me to join him and we made a point to get together for lunch every few months after that time. Before Don retired and after my own career began to take off, we would volunteer our time speak together at schools, etc. He would talk about his travels and photojournalism; I would talk about portraits of individuals and how both disciplines complemented each other in telling a visual story of the subject.

Now retired and living in Midlothian, Don Rutledge spent a lifetime using a camera to communicate to the world, the lives of individuals from all walks of life and distant lands. (144 different countries and every state in the Union) In his career, he photographed notable figures such as Loretta Lynn (before she became famous) as well as the engineers and scientist at NASA. This work contrasted his most notable work photographing individuals, both poor and wealthy. No one did it better than Don. His quiet, almost unassuming demeanor disguised a true talent, a tenacious spirit and uncompromising attitude for his work as well as a caring spirit for the people he photographed. He retired from the Foreign Mission Board bases in Richmond in the late nineties.

Long story short; when you see the movie: "The Help", remember my good friend, Don who has always reminded me to keep a "childhood curiosity" for the world around us.

A Portrait to benefit Ber

We had the pleasure of creating a portrait for the "D" family (pictured above) after they won a portrait session from the silent auction at ACAC in Richmond to benefit Ber, a seven year old boy battling stage 4 cancer. Ber was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was four years old. ACAC is a health and fitness club that sponsors the event each year. www.acac.com

We appreciate meeting this delightful family and contributing in a small way to the courageous young children and their families confronted with the challenges of cancer.

A Colonial Williamsburg Wedding

History was made in the personal lives of Kimberly and Michael in the very historical setting of Colonial Williamsburg, VA on July 31st. Softly bathed in the natural light within Bruton Parrish Church, the couple exchanged their vows before their closest friends and family. Much history has taken place in and around the walls of this church, as presidents and founding fathers have attended services in this same venue. The church bells at Bruton Parrish Church on Duke of Gloucester Street could be heard from The Williamsburg Inn where the couple enjoyed dinner and dancing after their nuptials.

History has now added the names of this University of Georgia couple who now begin their own personal journey and new life together. Congratulations!

Moonlight Romance

A full moon partially obscured by clouds provided the foundation of this romantic portrait of Lauren and Matt during the waning hour of their wedding day. Though the hour was 11:20pm, our last image of the day was created with the light of the moon as well as a taste of off camera flash to enhance the rim light around this newlywed couple. I actually think Lauren and Matt forgot about me during the few moments it took to create the image. Standing in a parking lot filled with cars and a shopping center in the distance, the camera was positioned at a low angle to exclude any visual distractions.

This image beautifully compliments the collection of photographs that will illustrate this wonderful day in Lauren and Matt's life.

Through the years I have been impressed at the precision of this edible art and the attention to detail that venues take to make newlyweds and their guests feel extra special. Alison and Charlie selected the Country Club of Virginia to entertain their guests and celebrate their wedding reception. Local Photographer’s Work Goes to International Exhibition

Photographs created by Robert L. Harris, Jr. of Robert Harris Photography in Richmond, VA and South Hill, VA has recently been accepted into the (GENERAL/LOAN) Collection of Professional Photographers of America's 2011International Photographic Competition. Harris' work will be on display at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, January 15-17, 2012, in New Orleans, La. This exhibition is held in conjunction with Imaging USA, an annual convention of professional photographers and several photographic associations.

A panel of jurors from across the United States selected the top photographs from more than 4,000 total submitted entries at Gwinnett Technical College in Georgia. Judged against a standard of excellence, Harris' portrait "The Theatre Director" was selected for the esteemed Loan Collection—the best of the best. The Loan Collection images will all be published in the much-anticipated “Loan Collection” book, and over 200 selected General Collection images will be published in the “Showcase” book by Marathon Press.

Titled "The Theatre Director", Harris' entry will be on display in New Orleans at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center alongside other photographic works from PPA’s photographic competition and traveling and special invitational displays. These images constitute one of the world’s largest annual exhibits of professional photography gathered simultaneously under one roof.

Simple Pleasures

We recently installed a beautiful 24x32 painting of the Medlin family. Photographed in the last light of the day, the portrait is a true representation of a family involved with a familiar delight and simple pleasure; feeding the ducks. With all of the visual entertainment and video games that are at our fingertips, nothing compares to the combination of sights, sounds and activity that families enjoy outdoors. No fancy technology hear; just plain bread and hungry ducks.

The warm light of the setting sun provides a pleasing tone to this painted memory, not only in the mind, but also on canvas.

With the popularity of location portraits (which we enjoy tremendously), we still create a majority of our bridal portraits in the controlled atmosphere of the studio. From the simplicity of window light and properly placed reflectors to camera studies created with as many as seven strobes, the goal is to produce a portrait that is lasting in its creation. There is never a problem if rain is in the forecast or the temperature is 95+ degrees. The studio is always comfortable.

Kristen Newton's portraits are featured above with the endless detail of her unique gown. Four to seven strobes were used to sculpt the pattern of light not only on her beautiful gown, but also on Kristen's expression. Subtle changes were made to Kristen's hair and veil during the session to show the different looks she would wear on her wedding day.

Elegance is always in fashion.

Bald Head Island, NC to Southern Virginia

Bald Head Island was a beautiful setting for Grey and Seth to celebrate their wedding. Within sight of "Old Baldy" lighthouse, the guests gathered inside the island chapel to witness their union. Following the quaint ceremony, Seth and Grey motored to the Shoel's Club at the end of the island in a covered golf cart to enjoy dinner and dancing with their closest friends and family. The evening ended with the groom joining the band to sing a few special songs for his wife and friends.

Our weekend was not complete until we joined Kaitlyn and Charles in the heart of Southern, VA for their wedding. Beautiful blue skies presided over the entire day until nightfall and fireworks filled the skies. The bride's dog also dressed for the occasion and witnessed her master's vows with a front row seat.

Wanda and I congratulate both couples on their wedding! Our best to you and your life ahead!

Wanda and I would like to congratulate the brides we worked with this past week. We had a great time capturing many special memories of Anne and Stephen on their wedding day in Richmond, VA. The day was not complete until the the bride's uncle chauffeured them in his vintage Bentley to the Jefferson Hotel. This beautiful automobile was a perfect ride for a great couple. We wish them well as they enjoy a trip to France and Switzerland.

We also had the pleasure of creating a beautiful bridal portrait for Sara-Manson Hawthorne who was married this past Saturday as well. The gown was custom made with elegant straps hand sewn from Sara-Manson's mother's gown. The final portrait was custom painted to bring out the classic beauty of both the bride and the dress that is unique and unforgettable.

Sara-Manson commented how "alive" the portrait looked when she viewed the completed art for the first time. "The entire process was better than I ever could have expected."

This term was first used by the great landscape photographer, Ansel Adams who documented dramatic black and white photographs of the untouched American landscape . As a young boy, he discovered the piano and developed a talent that could have carried him through a lifelong career in music. A few years later however, he discovered photography. Adams found similar meaning in the process of photography to that of performing concert music. He realized that a sheet of music filled with notes could not be fully appreciated until the talent of the pianist brought them to life on the instrument. The same holds true in photography.

Adams would work on a negative (sometimes an entire day) in the darkroom to bring out the full range of what he felt and visualized when the photograph was made. He equated this process with performing the music in a concert. Thus his phrase, " The negative is the score: the print is the performance"

In today's digital world, this phrase is vitally important for photographers to understand. The moment a photograph is made is only the beginning of the creative process. It is only complete when the artist carries the vision through to a "well performed" print.

Yes, we see most photographs (including personal ones) on a computer. Technology is a wonderful vehicle for sharing images in ways we never have previously, however the value of a skillfully crafted print holds the true and lasting vision of the artist and the hearts of subjects it preserves for generations to come.

A family is like a fingerprint; they are all unique. With today's busy lives, we realize the one common element is that many families are scattered across the country (world) and the time spent together is a true rarity. We are in the privileged position to be a part of many families by creating a work of art of these cherished moments when loved ones are together. A portrait captures these fleeting moments for everyone to hold their loved ones close, even when they are far away. Family is the "heart" of our lives.

We just had the pleasure of installing and presenting a beautiful portrait to the Colonial Theatre in honor of Mayor Earl Horne and the auditorium named after him. The 50"x30" framed canvas portrait was created to celebrate the theatre's past history as well as its future importance to South Hill and the entire Southside area of Virginia and northern North Carolina.

In creating the portrait, we wanted to feature Mayor Horne who largely steered the efforts of the theatre's revitalization. The process of designing the portrait began by placing a beautiful new grand piano on the stage to layer the portrait with meaning and tell a story of the new life of the venue. This elegant instrument creates visual depth and contrasts the antique movie reel Mr. Horne is holding. This piece pulled from the theatre's archives dates back over sixty years and represents the Colonial's previous life. Eric Sadowski, the theatre's technical director, helped light the stage and curtains which compliment the portrait with the musical notes and contrasting red gels. We then added five strobes to light the mayor in the balcony of the auditorium with depth and dimension. Finally, we asked Mr. Horne to wear his tuxedo to complete the story of past, present and future.

South Hill, VA is a small town in Southern Virginia that is situated nicely near two beautiful lakes (Lake Gaston, Buggs Island: Kerr Lake) and the crossroads of US 1 and Interstate 85. It is the home where I grew up and still visit once a week to create portraits for clients in Southern Virginia. I have recently enjoyed working with the Mayor of this thriving small town. Upon entering Mayor Horne's office I mentioned it would be the perfect setting for his portrait. The office overlooks the town from the second story of the newly restored Colonial Center. We planned the portrait session for mid afternoon as the sunlight on the exterior buildings would be at the best angle at that time. We added four strobes to light the Mayor and the interior office. The resulting light created depth; from the chairs positioned in front of Mr. Horne to the town in the distance. A 20mm lens was used to capture the office interior with the town's name visible through the window just over his shoulder. Finally, an office plant was placed in the far right edge of the frame to balance the composition. Mr. Horne's expression completes the camera study very nicely and gives a warmth to the portrait that is both inviting to residence of the town as well to those researching from afar on the web.

With today's disposable society and "trash the dress" sessions, you may wonder; do today's brides desire beautiful portraits anymore? The answer is a resounding, yes!

During this past month, we have been busy creating beautiful portraits for brides being married this spring. We create a large percentage of portraits in the studio where we have ultimate control of light and zero chance of soiling the gown. The camera studies and resulting finished portraits will become a beautiful memory for generations. Future grandchildren will appreciate the beauty of "grandmother's" gown and elegance.

Light and form are at the foundation of the bridal portrait. We sculpt as many as six individual strobes to feature the gown as well as the bride's beauty. Before completion, the portrait is enhanced by hand to bring out the subtle detail of the gown and finally framed in an appropriate moulding for the client's home.

The session is usually scheduled about 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding. This gives the bride a chance to enjoy her gown and "test" the alterations. If any adjustments need to be made, there is time to "tweak" the final alterations if necessary. The bridal session also is a great preview of the complete ensemble (hair, makeup, flowers, gown) This is a great stress reducer for the bride to know that her vision has become a reality.

A Final Salute

Our recent trip to Athens, GA reminded us of how precious each day is. Although we were there to attend a photography convention and attend seminars, we found ourselves in the midst of a community coming together to mourn the loss of a police officer who was shot and killed while working in the community. Several thousand police officers along with family and friends gathered in an adjacent area of the conference center to remember their colleague and friend. Many attending the convention also paused from their activities to witness the procession. With literally thousands in the area, only the sound of a bagpiper could be heard as Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian received a final salute.

Creating personalized art for our clients is only half of the service we provide for them. The other dimension of our approach is to coordinate the finished piece with the room and decor of the individual home or office environment. In each case, the design process begins before the art is created. We begin the process with the end in mind.

What is the style of the room and taste of the client?

What size is appropriate for the space?

What are the interests and personality of the subject, etc.

What style frame will complement the portrait and blend with the room?

With these factors in mind, we begin the creative process that will carry through until the art is installed for the client. The entire process is enjoyable, but the best part is unveiling the finished art and seeing what was once imagined become a lasting reality.

The Spaghetti Moment

There is a moment in time when all of the elements of a scene come together for just a fleeting moment. When that moment is frozen in a photograph, it seems too perfect to be unplanned, when in fact it truly is. Remember the scene in "Lady and the Tramp" when the two dogs are eating spaghetti and they both unexpectedly begin to eat opposite ends of the same noodle? The moment the two canines slurp the noodle until their noses touch and their expressions peak; that is a spaghetti moment. These moments not only happen in fictitious movies, they happen in everyday life as well.

We had the pleasure of creating images of two year old, Cooper for a painting for his parent's home. During our time together, his mother Stephanie had been quietly present and just out of camera range. At the end of the session, Cooper stretched as far as he could to kiss his mother and "the spaghetti moment" happened for just an instant. His feet left the floor to reach his mom and the moment was gone, but the image will now last for a lifetime.

Spaghetti anyone?

Many individuals shape our careers and help to perfect our vision and craft. The analogy of the movie mentioned above was brought out during a week long study with portrait artist, Greg Daniel last year. I appreciate his insights that have now become part of my experiences as an artist. Thank you, Greg.

Happy Valentine's Day

Wanda and I found ourselves in Virginia Beach on Valentine's Day and decided to take a brief stroll on an almost deserted beach. After all, it was 70 degrees in February! I'd like to say I planned it, but sometimes the day just works out.

The only other souls on the beach was the couple in the distance and a few gulls.

Opening Night at the Colonial

The Colonial Theatre in South Hill, Virginia will once again shine as a center for the arts. Polished to its original beauty, the theater is part of the Colonial Center which includes a ballroom, an art gallery as well as the Mayor's office which features a beautiful view that overlooks the town.

Built in 1925 by Gilbert Saunders, the 400 seat auditorium featured many notable actors back in the day, including Joan Crawford and Roy Rogers. The theater will host the Mrs. Virginia Pageant as well as other events in 2011. The future looks bright for this restored treasure of South Hill and Southside Virginia.

Congratulations to the Town of South Hill, and all those who played a part in the restoration of this beautiful theatre.

Fire and Ice

A bitterly cold northwesterly breeze whipped up a fiery sunset over a very chilly James River, just west of Richmond. A long camera exposure allowed the wind whipped water to take on a very smooth sheen as it flows east toward the City of Richmond. The last light of the day painted the clouds with a beautiful hue of magenta. The warmth of the clouds helps to contrast the otherwise wintry scene.

Wedding in a Winter Wonderland

Our last wedding of the year was a beautiful in all respects. Wanda and I were fortunate to create very special images for Mary and Andy at River Road Church in what turned out to be a storybook wedding. A light blanket of snow added a wonderful layer to some of the photographs, even though it was a little chilly. A special thank you to our friend Margaret Almond who's assistance at the church is always appreciated...for more years than I can count.

The Kings of Swing created a vast array of music at the Commonwealth Club, including a Chicago medley and a few Christmas tunes. The band is beyond comparison with their full complements of horns.

Congratulations to the Dibble and Waters families for a wonderful day.

Wind Swept

The night sky lit by the moon produced a haunting display of clouds swept by the wind yesterday evening around 9:00 pm. I noticed the clouds driving home from work and actually made the photograph after parking the car in the driveway. Not having a tripod with me to steady the camera, I braced myself and the camera against the car for a 1 second exposure. It took several attempts to record the image without motion from the camera. The snow in the foreground helped to reflect moonlight and create detail in the trees and snow covered ground. Brrrrr....

A light dusting of snow fell overnight in the Richmond area. As a result, our last surviving roses seemed like ornaments in the first light of the day. Natures beauty in the transition of Autumn to Winter. Kinda puts one in the holiday spirit.

It has been a pleasure to work with the Martin family to create this painted portrait of their children. The camera study was made as Wanda involved them with a "curious" activity. The kids momentarily forgot the presence of our equipment which was literally at ground level (me too). The fluid dynamics of the image began to gel as their interests peaked and all of the elements of the portrait came together for just a brief moment. A beautiful frame was selected to complete this artful piece and smaller images of each child were also created to complement the 24x30 inch painting for their home. Its fun to work and still play at the same time, just like kids.

A beautiful portrait will be installed before Christmas morning of the teenage Jones children. The landscaped grounds around the property provided a wonderful setting for this camera study. Daisy, their trusted friend and pet was also included in the image to complete the chapter of this growing family. The natural light of this portrait provided sculpted light on Emily and Jack's features and also created a magical glow around Emily's flowing brown hair. This casually posed portrait will blend beautifully in the family living area and will also provide lasting memories for Christmas' to come.

As Cissy and Brian begin their life together, we joined them to celebrate their engagement and create a few meaningful images of this time in their relationship. We were greeted with a beautiful fall day with just enough chill in the air to allow the couple to really portray their warmth for each other. The setting along Fine Creek worked beautifully. Thank you to the Mill for granting us permission to use this beautiful setting.

We have photographed both Brian and Cissy on separate occasions before their relationship flourished. We photographed Brian's sister on her wedding day 11 years ago and Cissy was a bridesmaid of one of her close friends three years ago. Now its their turn as they plan their wedding on the Outer Banks next spring.

Congratulations Cissy and Brian, we look forward to photographing your wedding in the coming months. Next time with salt water of the Atlantic and sand between our toes!

Monster Mash 2010

Thanks to all the little goblins who stopped by to have their picture made Saturday evening during Monster Mash to benefit the South Hill Revitalization Committee. We had a record number of little spooks to warm up an otherwise chilly and breezy evening. Over $1,000.00 was raised to benefit the SHRC . This year marks a milestone of over $5,000.00 contributed from your Monster Mash photographs since the event started a few years ago. We were happy to volunteer our time and cover all of the expenses of printing your photographs. This allowed your entire donation to benefit the committee. Thanks to all of those who volunteered to make the evening a huge success. The event was held at the Market Square within sight of the newly renovated Colonial Theater (now referred to as the Colonial Center) A major event is already planned next year as the Colonial Center will host the Mrs. Virginia Pageant in the newly restored venue.

The King Family

We just had the pleasure of completing and installing a beautiful painted portrait for the King Family. The process started just before their oldest daughter, Caroline left for collage at Wake Forest. Although Gay and Burke live in the Richmond area, they call the Gloucester area their hometown. Wanda and I traveled to the King's summer cottage to complete the vision of a portrait of their family in this location as it was special to all of them. We composed a portrait with the goal of utilizing the vaulted space over the fireplace. The unique composition filled the wall with layers of meaning which included the stone bench that their son, Taylor is sitting on and the brackish water of the Chesapeake tributary in the distance. The branches of a towering tree (very likely older than the family's ages combined) completes the vertical composition. Lastly, a beautiful contemporary frame was chosen to finish the 30"x48" portrait and "marry" it to the room.

It was a pleasure to see Mom's face as the vision became a reality. Now her family is always together, even when they are apart. Thank you for allowing us to help complete the memory.

The above images represent the close bond of a family of eight. Dr. Paul Bailey and his wife, Wanda call the banks of Lake Gaston home as do their six children ranging from a senior in high school to the second grade. This family has a healthy range of interests from music to triathlons.

The biggest challenge was getting everyone at home at the same time. With busy schedules we were able to carve out just a brief window where everyone could be at home to create the portraits. The evening could not have been better.

With the portraits completed, the Bailey family returned to their normal routine; dad was off to run a 10K, Sarah was on her way to visit her boyfriend, PJ; I'm not sure where he went, mom went to prepare dinner, and Erin would have posed for me until there was no daylight left.

Thank you, Bailey's. We enjoyed our time with you and know the portraits will be a treasure for years to come.

Feeding the Ducks at Sunset

We had a spirited session with the Medlin family at sunset this week. The ducks emerged on cue as the sun slipped over the horizon. The resulting image, unscripted and beautiful was one of the last of the day. We will recommend this image to be painted and framed for their new home. Well done, Medlins...oh and the ducks too!

Megan, a rising senior at Appomattox Governor's School is driven to perfection with both school and dance. We had a wonderful time collaborating with her to achieve unique images that speak to her love of ballet. Her goal is to pursue a collage career before her ultimate goal as a professional ballet dancer is realized. Megan said, "I work really hard at it." She no doubt has beautiful form and a graceful presence in front of the camera.

Its Twins

Older sister, Gwen was blessed with twin brothers as her parents, Jay and Elizabeth became parents for the second and third time within minutes. With the twins just a few weeks old, the family visited the studio to capture the tiny features of there newborn sons and growing family. Wanda mentioned that the infants were especially cuddly as we spent the morning photographing the family. We came away with some very special images to go with portraits we made of their older sister three years ago.

I still remember Elizabeth (Biffy) in her wedding gown. A beautiful family has emerged from that beginning eight? years ago.

Nature's Art

We recently ended our day of photographing just outside of Gloucester,VA. and received the gift of a beautiful sunset over a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. There are few images in life that compare to a beautiful sunset. No matter what our day has been like or how rushed our week may have been, a sunset makes us pause and take notice. We realize that the show will only last for a brief time, so it is common to soak in the last light of the day. I like to think of a sunset as a soothing visual tonic that God gives us to remind us of His beautiful creation through nature's art.

A Festive Day in History

Close to 300 guests witnessed the wedding of Nan Stikeleather and George Durban at St. Paul's Church in Richmond. Their marriage in this historic setting near the Virginia state capital was beautiful and festive. (This wonderful day was in stark contrast to the events leading to the end of the Civil War when Confederate President, Jefferson Davis was attending services in this church, hours before Richmond fell. He was summoned away and led out of the city to avoid being captured by Union troops.) Over 140 years later, Nan and George's wedding day adds a pleasant footnote to the storied events that have taken place in this church.

After an evening at the Commonwealth Club with family and friends, the couple was chauffeured away in the convertible Nan and all of her siblings used as they learned to drive while in high school. Enjoy the ride.

A Kindred Spirit

As I photographed Jarrett for his Senior Portraits, I found that there are alot of similarities in our lives. As with Jarrett, I grew up with two older sisters, played outfield for the same high school and volunteered for our local emergency services. To top it off, we have both spent time working on a tobacco farm. Even though I am a few years older than Jarrett and live in Richmond, I found myself reliving a few memories of growing up in my hometown.

For Jarrett's Senior portraits, we stood in left field at the local high school (the turf was in great shape!), he also donned his turn out gear and shared a moment with his sisters who he obviously adores. Thanks again Jarrett; a kindred spirit, it was good to stand in the outfield with you!

Wedding in the Garden

The Japanese Garden at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond was the backdrop for Darryl and Kanae's wedding and celebration. The garden was a beautiful setting as music and vows filled the air on a warm summer evening. Kanae's family made the trip from Japan to be with their daughter on her wedding day. Darryl's mother also celebrated her birthday during the dinner reception at the Tea House within the garden.

Emily at Five

Emily is a very mature and beautiful five year old child. The setting was on the family's sprawling property just outside of Richmond. We chose an area by the lake on the far end of the property to create the portrait. It was a fitting location, however the lighting needed a little help to create modeling and depth on her face and curls. Light was added by using strobes and reflectors to help define Emily's features while retaining the rim of light around her hair and shoulders. Being a hot day, we had a conversation about her favorite ice cream. This raw image will now be enhanced and canvassed to 24"x30" before being framed and installed in her parent's new home. Happy Birthday, Emily...now....who's ready for ice cream!

The James River is a natural resource that many families in the Richmond area make a part of their lives. With a vast array of activities, a family can kayak, hike, mountain bike, fish or just relax while enjoying the wildlife that lives along the river. With the daily stress of work in a metropolitan area, the river is just a stones throw away for the majority of families living in Metro Richmond.

In this portrait, Mom and Dad are both lawyers who enjoy the benefits of the James River's activities. For this reason, we chose to photograph them along the river bank. Although the morning was very warm, a breeze coming off the water created a refreshing moment as the image was made. Today a portrait was made; tomorrow we paddle the river!

Down on the Farm

Growing up on the farm can be a daily adventure. With tractors, open fields and plenty of fresh air, what's not to like being a kid in the country. We recently photographed formal portraits of the Jones children and to end the session, we played a little. The two older sisters frame their younger brother in a metaphor of their bond as siblings. With a few pieces of farm equipment in the background, the image creates a wonderful moment that their parents will enjoy in addition to the formals which were also made in various locations around the property.

As the children grow older and remember this slice of life, they will feel the grass crunch under their bare feet...just as they did when the portrait was created.

A Trip Around Richmond

To illustrate a personal engagement album for Mary and Andy, we had the pleasure of making brief visits to several areas around Richmond. The city is steeped in history, which was Mary's major in college. She asked if we would consider illustrating a book by visiting several historic areas as well as personal favorites and we gladly accepted. On our whirlwind excursion we visited the Jefferson Hotel where Andy had proposed to Mary during dinner. We also stopped by a few historic areas around the city such as the Valentine Museum, Monument Ave., Byrd Theater and Libbie Hill Park. Our final stop was on the couples front porch. There's no place like home!!

Vacation and Family Time

Many moments come to mind when I think about my family. Some of the best memories have come when we all "gear down" and spend time together on vacation. With the girls now young adults and Ashley engaged to be married, it seemed extra special to take what will probably be our last vacation with just the four of us.

A cruise was never on my radar however at the suggestion of the rest of the family we decided to drive to Jacksonville and set sail to the Bahamas for five days of R&R and beautiful sunsets. We ate and soaked up the sun (I was nicknamed the "sunburn police") while enjoying the many activities on board the ship. To be brief; it was the perfect vacation.

Once in Nassau I was content to soak in the busy street life while Wanda and the girls shopped. On our drive back home from Jacksonville, I glanced over the front seat to witness what I have seen since Ashley and Katie were toddlers,two girls totally spent and asleep with their heads just inches from each other. Only difference is they are'nt children anymore...they are all grown up.

Ohh.. looking forward to what lies ahead. As my grandmother used to say as she sat quietly smiling during family gatherings, "I'm making a memory"

Among Mom's flowers

The above camera study is the foundation of a beautiful Canvas Oil Portrait that will be created from this image. Once completed, the 24x30 inch piece will not only capture a likeness of this beautiful child, but more importantly her personality.

The setting was chosen to frame the subject with flowers her mother planted and enjoys caring for. The red wagon to the left compliments the roses and visually carries the viewer's eyes through the portrait. Finally lighting was refined in a pleasing warmth that matches the genuine expression of our young subject who was so proud of being three years old. A portrait of her brother will also hang on an adjacent wall to complete the heirlooms of Mom and Dad's children at three.

An Expression Tells the Story

There are moments when an expression says it all. It is even better when that special moment is captured for a lifetime. Jennifer and Brian were enjoying a beautiful and breezy afternoon at Celebrations on the banks of Swift Creek Reservoir. Our goal was to capture their relationship for a special album of photographs for the couple to share with guests at their upcoming wedding reception. This particular image truly captured their joy of being together. The gentle breeze adds life to the image and compliments their genuine expressions.

I love this moment...I'm happy they love it too!

Painting with Light

In the days of film (we still use it at times) an incident light meter was a must to measure light values and ratios especially when mixing strobes with ambient (existing light). (It's the piece of "jewelry" seasoned photographers wear around their neck) A visual confirmation was only available in the mind of the photographer (unless a special Polaroid back was attached to the camera to confirm the vision) before exposing film.

Fast forward to digital and I still use an incident meter in the same way. Visualizing the photograph before exposure is still the best way to create art. The light meter is at the foundation of the process of "painting with light" and how it will affect the subject. (not the screen on the back of the camera; which serves as a confirmation of a picture, but nothing else) The core of the process of visualization helps to engage the mind and "see" the image before an exposure is made.

This process usually goes unnoticed by our subjects as Wanda is usually the "test" to confirm the vision before we place our true subject in the scene. With lighting and composition in place, we are able to give our complete attention to our subject which enables us to bring out the most important element of the photograph; the individuals personality.

When scouting locations, subjects are often surprised when we find a suitable area for a photograph. In these portraits of Jarrett, we used settings surrounding his family's property that complemented his choice of clothing. A weathered building and an old barn were used in the two images shown above. Lighting was sculpted with scrims and gobos (to block stray light) to create dimension and depth in each photograph. The resulting edge lighting chiseled Jarrett's jawline and shoulders for a more powerful feel to the photograph. Finally, his complementing expressions complete the portrait.

On Top of the World

Elissa and Mike shared a beautiful Spring day with their closest friends and family to celebrate their wedding at The Mill at Fine Creek in Powhatan County. They met "On Top of the World" (so to speak) as they both share a serious passion for rock climbing. Mike is professional guide and author of climbing while Elissa is a teacher when she is not scaling sheer mountain walls of granite.

Many of their "rock monkey" friends took a day off from climbing to celebrate with Mike and Elissa. Mike's brother mentioned to him some time ago that he would never meet a girl on top of a mountain. I guess Mike proved his brother wrong...

As for this newly married couple, Mike spoke of his relationship with Elissa when he summed it up in three words..... "I love us."

Congratulations Mike and Elissa... I know you will look out for each other in your life ahead; especially while climbing.

A Walk in the Park

After a full week of photographing commercial assignments, several commissioned portraits of young girls and boys on location and in the studio, several bridal portraits and an extended senior session, we ended our week strolling the lake at the University of Richmond with Jason and Lindsey. It was good to get to know this engaged couple and enjoy the weather and beautiful scenery all around us. The pollen that was so evident earlier in the week had been washed away from an overnight rain. We spent the better part of an hour visiting areas around the lake to capture this wonderful time in their lives in portraits. We look forward to being a part of their upcoming wedding day in May. Congratulations Jason and Lindsey!

Signs of Spring

Signs of Spring are all around us! With the exception of the pollen, we all enjoy the new growth of plants and trees that lay dormant throughout the past winter. Even the bird's songs seem brighter as the days become longer and temperatures warm the Earth.

The above images were captured around our yard over Easter weekend after a day of yard work on Saturday. The resulting images were made using a Nikon D300 with both a 70-200 2.8 lens (bird) and a 105 2.8 macro lens (close up images)

In both cases, the lens was used wide open (2.8) to render a very shallow depth of field to isolate the intended subject matter. (bird and blooms)

You can even use a point and shoot camera to capture close up images of blooms and flowers by using the macro setting on the camera. You'll be surprised how well they turn out. The secret is to move in very close and focus on an individual bloom. You don't have to travel far to create meaningful pictures. It's even better when they are made in your own backyard.

Singing in the Rain

A few years ago, Mary walked down the aisle as her sister's maid of honor. Now the rolls will be reversed, as Mary begins planning for her upcoming wedding to Andy. To honor their engagement, we photographed them in what would seem a dreary and rainy afternoon. The old saying is true, "bad weather makes great pictures." We photographed this willing couple amidst the heavy mist of rain that fell over Richmond last week. The resulting light could not have been better, especially with Mary's warm smile lighting up the images. Of course, Andy looks great too... Once the couple's selection is made, we will custom design special "save the date" cards for their prospective guests. These among other images will also be designed into a custom bound book for guests to view at their reception.

Cheyenne Facchina

Cheyenne is a rising senior at Kenston Forest; Class of 2011. I first met Cheyenne when she enrolled in a photography class I was teaching a year ago. Although she was the youngest members of the class, her budding skills in photography and composition were already apparent. In fact, she was among the best in the class.

Fast forward a year later; the above photographs from Cheyenne's Senior session (photographed this week) are representative of a very simple and direct composition. Nothing competes with her natural features and engaging expressions that were allowed to flow throughout the session. The resulting portraits will stand the test of time as they truly capture her great personality.

Cheyenne will have ample opportunities to practice her skills in photography in a few months as she plans to travel to Italy with her family to tour the boot shaped country this summer.

Michael Taylor Couture

Fashion designer, Michael Taylor hosted an invitation only show of his new line recently. Mr. Taylor grew up in Richmond before working in New York for a number of years. Now located in the old "Lucky Strike" building on the James River, Michael Taylor Couture has designed gowns for a number of Richmonders and beyond. An article featuring his work ran in Sunday's Flair section of the Richmond Times Dispatch.

Our work was also installed as part of the exhibit. Three of our 30x40 prints featured a past client wearing one of Micheal's dresses at her daughter's wedding.

We wish Michael much success with his fashion and look forward to collaborating with him on future projects.

Ber's Bowl Rescheduled for March 5th-7th

Ber is a typical five year old child who just happens to be battling "stage 4 cancer". His cancer is so rare he frequently travels to New York for treatment. The costs associated with the travel alone are quite expensive.

To aid Ber and his family, ACAC Athletic Club is hosting a weekend to benefit Ber and his family. Work out for free and ACAC will donate to Ber's cause.

Fuji Masterpiece Award

A panel of seven Master Photographers from across the country judged the Virginia Prof. Photographers Assoc. annual photographic print competition this past weekend. They were responsible for evaluating hundreds of images in virtually every discipline in photography during the VPPA annual convention in Richmond. We received three awards for our photography including the Fuji Masterpiece Award for the wedding image "New Horizons." This photograph features Ashley and Matt on their wedding day at Hermitage Country Club in Goochland County. This entry also received a Court of Honor award.

A New Life Begins

One of the nicest aspects of our daily routine is to photograph life in the happiest of times. We've had the occasion of photograph Laura since her wedding day five years ago. Since then we have watched her family grow by two. Her latest addition (a little girl) is a bundle of smiles and giggles. Laura comes from a family of Clemson grads. I wonder if her kids see an orange tiger paw in their future?

Telling a Visual Story

A successful story should engage the reader from the beginning of the book until the last page is turned. A successful visual story is no different when photographs are captured and designed in a compelling way. The images featured above are designed as a visual chapter (2 page spread) of a wedding story. Just as words are composed in a novel; photographs are designed in a story for the viewer to appreciate the many facets and fleeting moments of a day filled with activity. A design that allows the photographs to "speak" as a group is critical. Of course, each photograph must be allowed to"speak" individually as well. The resulting story should leave the viewer with a sense of "reliving the day" until the last page is turned.

Twins

We have had the pleasure of photographing Brennan and Tucker since they were just a few months old. To mark the milestone of their fifth year of life, we photographed them once again to create a special portrait; in this case individually. It was decided that although the boys were twins and had been photographed together their entire lives, we would create a unique portrait for each boy to be hung in a room that would include their older sister. Although the clothing is the same, the oil portraits are distinctly different. Each 24"x30" portrait will be custom framed and become the focal point of the room.

A third major snow storm has blanketed the area in just over six weeks. A few remaining leaves are stubbornly hanging on despite the cold winter grip of over 30" of snow in the Richmond area this winter.

One of my favorite photographs of my daughter Ashley (now a senior in collage) was made about 20 years ago when she was about two years old. This image (used film) was made while spending time at Buggs Island Lake in the southern most part of Virginia. Ashley spent a lot of time "cruising" the yard in her pink Barbie Corvette. The keys in Ashley's hand (skeleton key) were attached to a key ring with my Grandfather's logo of his past business, "E.H. Harris Oil Corp." It was a nice addition to add another layer of memories to appreciate in the photograph.
The photograph was planned down to Ashley's foot visible below the open door as well as the keys. Her expression however is totally spontaneous. I like to use the phrase; "planned spontaneity" I use this technique all the time when planning a portrait session. The photograph is designed to bring out elements within the photograph that are meaningful to the subject. The key (no pun intended) is to allow expressions to be spontaneous during the moment the photograph is made. When all of the elements come together (expression, design, lighting) the image is made to be appreciated even decades later.

Sunrise after the Storm

It's always nice to receive a "Thank You" note in any form, email, text, phone call, etc. There is something however that is especially nice when someone takes the time to compose a thank you note by hand. We received such a note from a High School Senior who will be graduating this Spring.
Emily writes, "I really enjoyed taking pictures with you! All of the shots were amazing and everyone else thinks so too...especially the jacket picture! Thank you so much for everything and I hope to see you again soon! I'll definitely call you guys when I'm getting married. Thanks so much, again!"

Nashville, TN

Just back from Nashville, TN. When traveling I always like to bring home a couple of images for myself that will serve as a memory of the trip. Trying to avoid "touristy" snapshots its nice to dig a little deeper to find a memory that is a little bit different. The image above was made inside "Tootsies" a legendary music venue along Broadway in downtown Nashville. I chatted briefly with the musician at the window and asked if I could make a few pictures as he restrung his guitar. The only light exposing the photograph was from the window. The strongly angled light brought out the texture on the walls behind the subject as well as the subject himself. Although the wall is very "busy" the lines in the photograph created by the angle of the camera leads the viewer's eye to the subject's face. Everything else in the image supports the story of this musician and the venue. "If only the walls could speak".
